surf, yoga & meditation retreat

teacher

Sagara fell in love with surfing as a kid whilst living in Rio de Janeiro. Its been life long pursuit only equaled by his interest in Buddhism and meditation. He is a very experienced Mindfulness, Focusing and NVC teacher as well as a Somatic Experience therapist. His yoga training is mostly Iyengar-based with some added nuances along the way. These days he lives in Lisbon with his wife, Ana, and daughter, Rosa. Sagara and Ana founded Centro Upaya in Lisbon.

next retreat

location

Fajã da Caldeira de Santo Cristo, in São Jorge's island is one of our favourite places in the world. It is a place of rare beauty, a natural sanctuary and a place of deep connection with nature.

the retreat

Amidst the beauty of this luscious land and the vast sea, we share what we most love doing - surfing, yoga and meditation. Whilst these are the core activities of our retreat, there are also incredible walks to be discovered, trips to the nearby waterfalls, scuba diving, stand up paddling and plenty of time for doing nothing and unwinding. The day starts with a yoga and meditation practice. What comes next depends largely on weather and ocean conditions. Before supper, there's an outdoors meditation practice.

None of the activities require having prior experience. However, given the physical nature of this event, participants will benefit from being in a fit physique. This retreat is also a tech-detox: participants are asked not to use mobile phones and computers within the perimeter of the compound.

We have all the equipment you need for surfing, scuba diving, yoga and meditation but you are welcome to bring your own gear, especially if you have a favourite surfboard or yoga mat.

accommodation and food

We will be staying at the local Surf Lodge. Accommodation is simple and has everything you need for a comfortable stay. Each room has its allocated bathroom. Most of the rooms are shared and single sex (unless you ask otherwise).

Food wise, the meals are vegetarian (this includes dairy and eggs) but sometimes participants go spear fisshing and the cook will gladly take care of that too. There is always plenty of fresh fruit. We are in a remote part of the island and, for practical reasons, we can’t cater for special diets. This is a no intoxicants retreat (no drugs or alcohol).
